City Break in Amsterdam #tm2AmsterdamThe Netherlands is also commonly known as Holland and its people are the Dutch. It would be near impossible to write about this country and not mention cheese, windmills and clogs. There is more to this destination though.Starting with the obvious, Amsterdam. The city is widely known for a very liberal outlook toward sex and drugs. The legal red light district is arguably the most famous, or is it infamous in the world.If this interests you, pop into the “The temple of Venus” sex museum. This article would be remiss if it did not cover the euphemistically named coffee shops. Aside from serving coffee, it is within the realm of the local law to buy and smoke marijuana (cannabis) here. The city, as is the case with most of the country, is fairly flat. Cycling is a popular means of transport and various bicycle trips are available.Discussing the weather is boring but it is worth noting that Holland is one of the more moderate European destinations. Cool summers, rarely reaching the mid 20’s (celcius) and mild winters, rarely dipping below freezing make it more tolerable than some of its neighbours.Those seeking a more cultural perspective of the country will enjoy the flower shows. Holland produces two thirds of the planet’s fresh cut flowers and bulbs. Tulips are especially popular.The country has a history of famous scientists and artists. Vincent van Gogh probably rating top on that list. Many paintings, drawings and more are on permanent display at the dedicated museum. Put your Guilders away, you will be spending Euros.Holland is bordered by Belgium and Germany with Denmark, Norway and England across the pond.
