Azores, this little archipelago is just shy of a thousand miles from its Portuguese parent, so your Euros are still good here. There are nine islands to choose from, the smallest only 7 square miles big! The entire population totals less than a quarter million people.
Get moving! There are 25 species of whale and dolphin to be seen, not to mention a wide variety of other underwater creatures. Sea lovers can also enjoying surfing or sailing. Needless to say, you can combine the two and go for a fishing trip.
An idyllic archipelago would not be complete without a golf course or three. Knock some balls around practically any time of year.
The natural beauty is inescapable. Two volcanic craters on the largest island double up as lakes, there are hot springs, grottos, caves and tunnels.
It goes without saying that seafood is abundant and are cooked in a Portuguese culinary style. Meat eaters will not go hungry and can still enjoy an Espetada. Other traditions from the mainland that have found their way to the islands include winemaking and the production of some very good brandy.
Each island is different from the other. The language, culture and cuisine take on a unique twist as you hop from one to another.
