Pay your respects to the King. Denmark is one of only a dozen monarchies in Europe. A kingdom of a different kind is the Legoland theme park in Billund. The Danish not only designed this well known kid’s favourite but are famous for their unique styling of everything from cutlery to furniture. Iconic for its simplicity and function, shoppers are guaranteed to bring home something unique.

Following through to health care, scenic wellness centres are widespread across the country. The beautiful geography and relatively flat landscape make it a popular cycling destination. Both fresh and saltwater fishing trips are a highlight for keen anglers.

Furthest south of the Scandinavian countries, means that the climate is more temperate. In summer the sun rises at 04h00 and sets 18 hours later. The longest day in the year, ‘sankt hans aften’ or St. John’s Day, is celebrated with songs, picnics and bonfires, typically on the beach. Witches made from cloth and straw are sometimes ‘burnt at the stake’ to send her to Bloksbjerg mountain. The habit is controversial and not all Danes partake.

Kayak polo is a new sport and you can learn to play in the capital, Copenhagen. Avid golfers will enjoy the many championship level courses in this country.

They eat a lot of meat and fish, especially herring. Rye sandwiches are popular, as are hotdogs from the sausage vendors.

Make sure you visit the largest Viking burial site in Ålborg and the Hans Christian Anderson museum in Odense.

As is common in many European countries, Danish beaches permit nude bathing.
