The Rock of Gibraltar, The Rock, The Gib or one of the Pillars of Hercules – all refer to the British territory connected to the south of Spain. Incidentally, they drive on the right side of the road.
The official language is English but Andalusian Spanish, Hebrew, Italian and others are also spoken here. To complicate matters further, the Gibraltarians have their own informal tongue called ‘Llanito’ which is a mix of all of the above.
This is reflective of the multitude of cultures you will find here. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Moors and even Vandals enjoyed a stay on The Rock. A duke once sold it to some Jewish converts from Spain.
Three marinas host some very expensive yachts and pleasure craft. Ocean based water sports are indeed a major draw card. Various reefs and many wrecks make for some great diving. Dive schools and equipment rental service the needs of divers of all skill levels. Bream and several other fighting fish attract anglers. Some of the waters also receive a fair share of wind, offering ideal conditions for windsurfers.
Despite the British influence, there is no golf course in sight, although those looking to catch a game need only drive across to the Costa Del Golf, Spain. Watering holes are however plentiful. Other sights include caves, siege tunnels, a visit to the crystal glass factory and many more.
