Liechtenstein

You will have to cross two borders before reaching the sea from Liechtenstein as it is nestled safely in the Alps. The principality is made up of only 35,000 German speakers. Unlike most monarchies, the Prince in Liechtenstein actually wields considerable power, but this is not a problem as most people like the fellow.

Political lesson aside, the country is popular as a winter time destination as there are nothing but Alps all around. Recreational skiing, alpine skiing, cross country skiing and ice skating on a natural ice rink are all part and parcel of the activities on offer in the colder months.

Warmer conditions see hikers, mountain bikers and cyclists who are not scared of climbing a few hills milling about. Adrenalin junkies can have a go at paragliding.

All year round, wine tasting at the aforementioned Prince’s Wine Cellar, in the capital, Vaduz is always an option. The Prince will be looking down on you from the Schloss Castle perched up high. This palatial building and others are worth admiring but you will have to do so from the outside only. Dating back even further are some Roman ruins. Those guys really did get around!

Strongly influenced by the French and Swiss, cuisine is somewhat international. As the people are of German origin, there is obviously a preference for pork dishes especially smoked or cured hams.

Your ski pass will be paid in Swiss Francs. Only two countries neighbour the microstate, Austria and Switzerland.
