There are certainly worse places to be than a beautiful island. Portugal is very tourist friendly and if at all possible, the island of Madeira is even more so. The nightlife will keep the party hardy busy and the shoppers can pick up some handmade embroidery and other items to give to your friends who stayed home this year.

Anyone can catch a fish, not everyone can catch a Marlin. This is hobby for the well heeled but should be on everyone’s list of 100 things to do before they go to that big holiday resort in the sky.

Volcanic soil, as is widely known, makes for happy plants. Follow the logic through and guess how the grapes that they use for wine turn out. Go to the Madeira Wine Festival and prepare to be impressed.

As any golfer will tell you, the game is best enjoyed on a fine course with a stunning scenery. You will be hard pressed to find anything that tops the sea views as seen from up high on the Palheiro Golf course. All those amazing vistas can be tiring, make sure you get a rest at the spa while you are there.

If you need to purge your soul, get on your hands and knees like the other pilgrims on 15 August and climb the 70 odd stairs to the church.
