The Serbs only regained their independence in 2006 which is one of the reasons why tourists are only beginning to discover this fascinating country - Serbia.Belgrade may be the capital but Novi Sad is the hub of culture and entertainment. Don’t write the capital off though, try one of their floating restaurants on the famous Danube River.Cuisine is varied and borrows from Mediterranean as well as Austro-Hungarian styles. Notably, many Serbs make brandy, pickled foods and even sausages at home rather than buy these products off the shelf. They have a sweet tooth and many, many desserts to choose from.Walk all those extra kilojoules off in one of the many national parks or abundant forests. Then again, if you can’t beat them, join them. Skip the walking and go on a wine route.Prefer to stay in one spot, then check out the Belgrade Film Festival in February or catch some tunes at the Jazz Festival in October.Nightlife is buzzing in the big cities and clubs stay open until the wee hours.Spend Serbian Dinar. The country you will be visiting is landlocked by eight countries including Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Kosovo and Croatia.
