Slovakia

The Slovaks are hard at work building a super strong economy leaving their commie roots well behind. Slovakia are part of the EU and Eurozone, needless to say therefore, the currency is the Euro.

They are landlocked, so no beach holidays here but there is plenty to do under the Slovak sun such as enjoy the National Parks and other areas of natural beauty with walking trails, mountain biking and more. The High Tatras mountains make for great skiing. The Danube and other rivers run through the country, which will surely amuse the fishermen.

Amongst other tourist attracticns is the Vlkolinec settlement of historic log houses is worth a visit as is the Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava. The Spis Castle is a sizeable example of medieval living and looks especially dramatic with winter snow.

Folk music is popular and most towns and cities have regular concerts. Traditional dress is often sported for the occasion and souvenirs are never too far away.

Healing springs, thermal waters, wellness centres and spa towns are luxuries every traveller should be entitled to.

The speak Slovak as well as a few a few other languages. Roma people account for nearly 10% of the population.

As with most countries, there cuisine is influenced by their neighbours, in this case the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland and others. A local favourite are Potato Dumplings with Sheep’s Milk Cheese. They are keen eaters with a penchant for pork.
