I felt much healthier, more awake ... just better in general.Alas, however, I really do love beer. Not because I enjoy getting hammered, but I'm a bit of a beer geek (going to beer tastings, taking tours of every brewery in a 100 mile radius of my house, etc.). So it's been hard to stay away completely and I've mostly slipped back into my old ways.Moderation is definitely the key. Rather than wholly depriving yourself of booze altogether, try cutting back to at most 1 beer a day.Just my $0.02.

I kicked alcohol – particularly beer – altogether last November and lost about 25-30 pounds in the next 3-4 months. It's the staying in places that makes you want to indulge in stuff. Anyways, the best of lucks in trying to cut down.-EthanBackpacking on Little Money

If you up your transit time, from one destination to another, you'll be too busy and tired from moving from place to place to feel like drinking. I actually found a nice excuse to stop drinking when I had my dental implant surgery last week. It's now been 7 days (and one happy hour). I was just telling a coworker last week I wanted to try to take a long break from alcohol as a challenge to myself. The hardest part is breaking the habit when in social situations, which is why I was proud of myself for attending a bar with coworkers and sticking to water.I agree with everything you wrote about while being on road. Gaining greater control over my drinking cues now, I hope, will pay off on my extended travels.

I'm with you for the challenge.
