It also stops you driving to the local shops when your bored! Even if you dont live in a town or city(which i dont) as long as theres a decent bus route within walking distance you'll be fine! i'll now have an extra £1000 when i depart, which is a big help and gives great peice of mind!

I have took control of my 'out of control' spending, and cut down on areas where I could have saved money. Canceled many direct Debits, and made little sacrifices that makes a big difference.I haven't got a short term aim to go traveling, but this will help me in my long term future when I want to take a year out of my hectic life to travel the world!A great article here and a great website.

Thanks for the advice Paul,

This has helped me lots in the last few months. - As for the saving part. I opened up an ING account and it is linked up to my regular bank account. Every month i have the ING account set up to automatically withdrawal a certain amount and i do not even see it. "out of sight, out of mind". As with the ING account if i do want to take money out i have to wait a couple of days. This is nice because i can be quite an impulse buyer. Anyhoo, thanks again for the great website.

- sell on eBay what you don't use. You will be surprised to discover that people are willing to buy almost everything. I sold lots of books but also things like second hand shoes plus many other things. I got around $750 by selling about 35 items. Not too bad considering these were things I would probably throw away anyway
- try to find additional income. I started letting my spare bedroom to a student a year ago. Living almost in the the center of Sydney I've been able to charge $200 per week. Not bad :) You could become a tutor or get weekend job. There is lots of opportunities
- instead of putting away money you have left at the end of the month, try to put aside a specific amount as soon as you get paid. I've been putting aside 50% of my salary on the day I get it. The rest needs to be enought to survive till next pay. It's a bit of excercise but it makes you pay more attention to how you spend your money
- find saving account which offers high interest or term deposit and put all your "travel" money there

Hi. I've been saving for my trip for a little bit over a year and I have a few other tips on how to get money:<br
